Message	Wikipedia, initially 4500 Ford GTs were planned and ultimately 4038 were produced. So I don't know how problematic the legal wrangling you mention really was. The Wikipedia article cites failed trademark negotiations over the use of "GT40" between Ford and the license holder, GT40 Safir Spares, but I think Ford simply got around that by calling their car the "Ford GT."
